Building a Natural Hair Care Routine: Where to Start

by Essence of Beauty 26 Oct 2023 0 Comments

Building a natural hair care routine is an essential step for maintaining the health and beauty of your natural curls. Whether you're newly embracing your natural hair or looking to revamp your existing routine, here's a step-by-step guide to help you get started:

Understand Your Hair Type/Porosity:
Before you begin, it's crucial to identify your hair type, as different textures and curl patterns require tailored care. Hair types are often categorized into Type 2 (wavy), Type 3 (curly), and Type 4 (kinky/coily). You can also find products based of your porosity level (high, low, or normal).

Gather Essential Supplies:

To start your natural hair care routine, you'll need a few key items:

    • Sulphate-Free Shampoo: These cleansers are gentler on curly hair, as they don't strip away natural oils.
    • Conditioner: Look for a hydrating and nourishing conditioner to keep your hair soft and manageable.
    • Wide-Tooth Comb: This will help detangle your hair without causing breakage.
    • Leave-In Conditioner or Detangler: Provides added moisture and makes it easier to manage your curls.
    • Deep Conditioner: Use this once a week to give your hair extra moisture and strength.
    • Styling Products: Such as curl-defining gels, creams, or oils to maintain your preferred hairstyle.
    • Microfiber Towel or T-shirt: These materials are gentler on your hair than regular towels, reducing frizz.

    Create a Washing Schedule:

Determine how often you need to wash your hair. Some people wash their hair once a week, while others do it less frequently. Overwashing can strip your hair of natural oils, so finding the right balance is key.

    Pre-Poo Your Hair:

Consider applying a pre-shampoo treatment with oils or conditioners to help protect your hair from excessive drying during shampooing. Leave it on for 15-30 minutes before washing.

    Shampoo and Condition:

    •  Wet your hair thoroughly with warm water.
    • Apply sulfate-free shampoo to your scalp and work it down to the tips, massaging your scalp gently.
    • Rinse the shampoo out completely.
    • Apply conditioner to your hair, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends.
    • Use a wide-tooth comb to detangle your hair gently while the conditioner is in.
    • Rinse out the conditioner with cold water to seal the hair cuticles and add shine.

    Deep Condition Weekly:

Once a week, use a deep conditioner to provide extra moisture and nourishment to your hair. Follow the instructions on the product and use a shower cap to intensify the treatment.

    Moisturize and Style:

    • While your hair is still damp, apply a leave-in conditioner or detangler.
    • Use styling products, such as curl-defining gels or creams, to create the desired look.
    • Style your hair as you prefer, whether it's wash-and-go, twist-outs, braid-outs, or protective styles.

    Protect Your Hair at Night:

Sleep with a satin or silk bonnet, scarf, or pillowcase to reduce friction and prevent frizz while you sleep.

    Maintain Regular Trims:

To prevent split ends and maintain healthy hair, schedule regular trims, typically every 2-4 months.

    Monitor Your Hair's Health:

Pay attention to your hair's needs and adjust your routine accordingly. If you notice issues like excessive dryness or breakage, make necessary changes to your products or regimen.

    Embrace Patience and Experimentation:

Creating the perfect natural hair care routine takes time and experimentation. What works for one person may not work for another. Be patient, and don't be afraid to try different products and techniques to find what suits your hair best.

Remember that consistency is key when building a natural hair care routine. With the right products and techniques, you can enjoy healthy, beautiful, and well-maintained natural curls.
